Abstract

Oxide surface films on metals and alloys are removed by treatment in a fused salt bath comprising a salt having basic properties (e.g. Na OH) and an oxidizing agent in such minor proportions (usually of the order 10 per cent) as will bring about further oxidation of the surface oxide to convert it into compounds at least partly removable in the molten bath, followed by treatment with an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid to complete the removal of the said oxide film. Suitable oxidizing agents are nitrates, chlorates, peroxides, perchlorates of for instance the alkali or alkaline earth metals, whilst sodium or potassium carbonate may also be added to the bath. A preliminary treatment in an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid may be given; whilst the alloys to which the invention specifically refers are those of iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium or tungsten, and especially the "stainless steels." The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of a fused bath of sodium carbonate and an oxidizing agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 464,982.
