Abstract

A filament, yarn or thread is passed through a foam of conditioning liquid, e.g. a textile lubricant in apparatus which comprises a closed container, means for maintaining a foam of a conditioning liquid therein and means, including filament inlet and outlet orifices, for guiding the running filament through the foam. Gas may be admitted through an orifice placed in the lower part of the container so as to be <PICT:0625032/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0625032/IV (c)/2> below the liquid level or placed so as to whip the liquid into a foam by directing a jet of the gas on to the surface of the liquid. If desired, the receptacle in which the foam is produced may be separate from the treatment vessel but connected to it by a conduit for the foam. As shown in Fig. 1, cylinder 1 is provided with end caps 2, 3. An air-tube 4 extends axially into the cylinder, and at least one orifice 8 is provided at the lower end. Air is blown into the liquid in the cylinder to produce a foam which fills the cylinder. The filament is traversed across the cylinder between eyes 9, the length of filament under treatment being regulated by guide 10. In a modified construction, the lower end of the cylinder is open and stands in a tray containing the conditioning liquid. As shown in Fig. 3, a horizontal cylinder 16 is provided with inlets 28 and outlets 27 for several filaments. Air from perforated pipe 23 bubbles through conditioning liquid in the cylinder and produces a foam which fills the cylinder. The cylinder may be transparent. The process may be applied to the conditioning of nylon yarn immediately before knitting and may be effected on the knitting machine itself between the bobbins and the knitting needles. The Provisional Specification describes an apparatus in which the filament enters and leaves the treatment vessel at the top and passes through a guide immersed in the foam. The conditioning liquid may be a solution of a soap.
