[Class 43] [Also in Group XV] A tool for labelling animals' ears comprises two parallel, co-operating jaws 1, 2, the jaw 1 carrying an upsetting pin 7 and a labelling washer 17a, and the jaw 2 carrying a punch 8 with a ho'der 9 for a hoilow rivet 17b and for another labelling washer 17, the holder 9 being yieldably mounted round the punch 8. The holder 9 is mounted on bolts 11 which slide in bores 12 in the jaw 2 against the pressure of springs 15 tending to keep apart the jaw 2 and holder 9 ; the bolt heads 13 rest in countersunk ends 14 of the holes 12. At the side facing the upsetting pin 7 the holder 9 has a recess 16 for the washer 17 and has a central bore 18 for the punch 8 ; the jaw 1 has a recess 6 round the pin 7. Tangentially to the edges of the recesses 6, 16, the jaw 1 and holder 9 each have a transverse slot 19 for a leaf spring 20 which bears against the edges of the washers 17, 17a to prevent their falling out. In use, a perforated washer 17 is threaded on a tubular rivet 17b and both are placed in the recess 16 of the holder 9, the rivet being supported by the nose 8a of the punch 8 ; another perforated washer 17a is placed in the recess 6 in the jaw 1. The animals' ear 17c is introduced between the washers, the handles of the tool are pressed to force the rivet through the ear 17c and washer 17a, and the rivet is then upset by the pin 7, pinching of the ear being prevented by stops 24 which may be adjustable on the jaws 1, 2. To permit expansion of the tail of the rivet 17b there is a space 25 between the pin 7 and recess 6. To prevent loss of the rivet if the tool is used with the jaw 2 uppermost, the holder 9 has three radial bores 25a, Fig. 10, each housing a ball 26 and compression spring 27, the inner end of each bore being reduced in diameter to retain the bail 26 therein when urged against the rivet 17b. The tool may be foot or power operated instead of manually. The Provisional Specification describes a device for removing the washers and rivet from an animal's ear, comprising a claw ring with the claws placed under the rivet washer and the ring being forced up by a draw screw which is threaded therein and .bears on the rivet.
