Abstract

624,405. Pneumatic guns. JAMESON, J. L. Sept. 16, 1942, No. 13096. [Class 92 (ii)] A gun comprises a chamber in which fluid pressure is built up and which has an outlet in line with the barrel and opening directly to the interior of the chamber, and means to clamp a diaphragm across the opening, the arrangement being such that the diaphragm shears from its clamping means and thus allows the application of pressure to a projectile in the barrel when the fluid pressure in the chamber reaches a predetermined value. In the construction shown, bullets 2 are fed down a shoot 23 to an oscillating breech-block 24 which is fitted with pawls adapted to impart a step-by-step movement to a metal strip 28 fed from a spool 29. A small section of the strip provides a temporary closure for the forward end of a cylinder 4 supplied with fluid under pressure by a pipe 18. The fluid is further compressed in the cylinder, ultimately to fracture the section of the strip 28 and thus to expel a bullet, by a plunger 4<SP>1</SP> driven by a ram 7 in a cylinder 8. Oil under pressure for driving the ram is fed to the cylinder 8, under the control of a piston valve 9, by a pipe 10. The movements of the piston valve are controlled by a relay piston 11 driven by a fluid supplied via a valve 17. The latter carries spaced abutments 14, 15, which are engaged by an abutment 12 fitted to an extension 13 of the ram 7. In modifications, the plunger may be driven by a steam engine, an internal-combustion engine, or an electric motor. In the case of an internal-combustion engine, the piston thereof is connected to the plunger, both being drilled to provide a passage for leading some of the gases from the engine to the cylinder 4.
