Abstract
624,139. Wood planing; sawing. SCHNEIDER, M., BAUR, G., and IMFELD, E. March 27, 1947, No. 8329. Convention date, April 6, 1946. [Classes 145(i) and 145(ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a hand planing-machine-also adaptable for use as a circular saw or drill-of the type embodying a housing 2 having a power-driven cutter head 4 and handle 1 and in which the bearing surface is formed by two flexible leaf springs 6 adjustable for the desired depth of cut with reference to the cutter head, the housing is provided with a spindle 9 on which two yokes 7, 12 are movably attached and capable of independent vertical adjustment with respect to each other by means of nuts 11, 13 respectively, the lower yoke being guided in the housing and spanning the inner ends of the leaf springs whilst the upper yoke acts through links 14 on the outer ends of the leaf springs. The assembly thus enables the leaf springs 6 to be adjusted simultaneously and conjointly to the same depth of cut and simultaneously and identically to any straight form of bearing surface. Rotation of the nut 11 raises or lowers the housing 2 and cutter head 4 in the yoke 7 to regulate the depth of cut; rotation of the nut 13 raises or lowers the yoke 12 and, through the medium of the links 14, the ends of the leaf springs 6 to enable the latter to conform to the shape of any flat or curved bearing surface. The drive may be by an electric motor 5 directly coupled to the cutter shaft and housed in the housing 2, or there may be a flexible shaft connecting the cutter head to any stationary electric motor. For drilling, a drilling chuck 19 may be screwed into the tapped bore 18 provided in the cutter head, see Fig. 1 (not shown). For sawing, a circular saw 20 may be screwed on to the cutter head, and a table 21 carrying a guard 22 is attached to the housing 2 by means of screws 24 and lugs 23 carried by the table. In this case the machine may, if desired, be inverted and clamped in a vice by the handle 1, Fig. 3.
