624,032. Porous compositions. BOMGREN, A. F. Jan. 28, 1947, No. 2617. Convention date, July 5, 1946. [Class 70] [Also in Group XII] Porous clinker for use in the manufacture of light concrete is obtained by heating dried, granulated slate, slate-clay or other shale or clay evolving gas when heated, first slowly in a vertical shaft 1 to about 800‹ C. and then rapidly to about 1200‹ to 1300‹ C. when spread as a thin layer. The shaft furnace may deliver on to the rotating hearth 5 of an annular tunnel furnace 7, the rate of discharge through a feeding channel 3 and the rate of rotation of the hearth being such as to provide a layer of material in which the grains lie free from one another, The furnace 7 is heated as by oil burners near the discharge end so that the material is subjected to increasing temperature by the gases which then heat the shaft furnace. The clinker coated with a glaze layer is discharged by a conveyer 9 and associated scraper which may be cooled.
