Abstract

623,896. Self-wringing mop. Mc'LEOD, I., and SPENCER, J. W. May 22, 1947, No. 13838. [Class 19] A mop of the self-wringing type comprises a rod-like handle, a stem carried by a bracket member and arranged transversley to said handle at its lower end and connected to said handle by said bracket member, sponge rubber or like soft resilient liquid-absorbent material surrounding said stem and means by which the absorbent material can be compressed along said stem to express the liquid absorbed therein. The device, Figs 1 and 3, comprises a housing 10 having a top wall, a rear wall, and two end walls 13 and 14. A rear projection 15 has a bore for a handle 17 or the projection could be shaped as a spigot to engage within a bore of a tubular handle. The wall 13 has a hole through which extends a tubular stem 19 fitted with a knob 20 at its outer end, while its other end is flared to form an abutment for a metal washer 22 fitted on to the stem. Another washer 23, on the stem, is disposed against the end wall 13. The stem is surrounded by blocks 24 of sponge rubber each having a hole enabling it to be slid on to the stem. The blocks may be moulded or otherwise formed with an impervious skin (not shown) extending around the top and sides. A guide rod 31 fastened to the end wall 14 extends within the stem thus supporting the latter. When wringing, the knob 20 is pulled outwards thus causing the stem 19 and washer 22 to move axially so that the blocks are compressed together. On releasing the knob the blocks resume their original shape and the stem returns to its normal position. The transverse stem may be connected by a linkage or Bowden wire with a lever or knob disposed at the top of the handle so as to effect the wring- ing operation without stooping. According to the Provisional Specification the guide rod may be attached firmly to one end wall of the housing and disposed within a hole in the other end wall, the stem being slidable on the rod and fitting snugly within the end hole. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 630,503.
