Description
Feb. 12, 1952 I g 2,585,160
BRICKLAYERS GUIDE Filed April 29, 1949 IIIIIII Inventor c b/w z 7?. Mann Altar/my Patented Feb. 12, 1952 UNITED sr PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to bricklayers guides and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a device for holding the conventional guide lines used in the laying of bricks. Two of the devices are utilized to hold between them the guide line and each of the devices is provided with an L-shaped body which is adapted to grip the corner portion of a wall, the tension of the guide line serving to hold the members in position. Novel means is provided for releasably fastening the ends of the guide lines in each of the members utilized and novel means is provided for tensioning the guide holding means. Means is also provided for insuring the device against slippage when once placed in position.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efiicient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which will eliminate the necessity of providing nails for holding a guide line and also for eliminating other crude methods heretofore employed for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel releasable means for holding rigidly the end of a guide line in a device of the character set forth.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention shown in use upon the corner of a brick wall,
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the device shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary further enlarged central sectional view of the device, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a bricklayers guide comprising an L-shaped frame having a relatively short leg I!) and a relatively longer leg H and having a centrally disposed opening 12 formed therein at the point of juncture between the legs I8 and II.
The free end of the leg in is provided with inturned pointed foot l3 and the free end of the arm H is provided with a like inturned pointed foot l4 which has centrally disposed therein a notch [5.
A handle I6 is affixed to the arm H by means of rivets I! or the like. Through that part of the handle which is adjacent the point of juncture of the arms l6 and H extends a carriage bolt it having a squared portion I!) which fits an opening 20 formed in the handle I6. Slidably mounted upon the squared portion I9 is a dished washer 2| having its convex face presented toward the handle IS.
A nut 22 is threaded upon the outer end of the carriage bolt I8 and a washer 23 is mounted upon the bolt inwardly of the nut and a compression spring 24 surrounds the bolt l8 and is adapted to bear against the concave surface of the washer 2! and against the inner face of the washer 23. A guide line 25 has its free end wound about the squared portion I9 of the bolt l8 between the outer side of the handle l6 and the convex face of the washer 2|, as shown at 26, and extends thence through the opening l2 and thence through the notch I5 to a twin of the device now described.
In use, it will be apparent that two of the devices shown and described herein will be utilized to hold taut the guide line 25 and that each of the devices may be quickly and easily mounted upon the corner of a wall such as is shown, for example, at 21 in Figure 1, and that when so mounted the free ends of the line 25 will be pulled through the notch l5 and opening 12 and then wound upon the carriage bolt and that thereafter the washer 2| will hold the same in position. When this is done the line 25 will hold the two devices together upon the corners of the wall which is under construction and that the pointed feet l3 and M will prevent the devices from slipping downwardly upon the wall. It will also be apparent that a proper tension may be maintained upon the washer 2| by adjusting the position of the nut 22 upon the carriage bolt 18.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising an L-shaped body having a centrally disposed opening at the juncture of its arms, a handle attached to one of said arms, an inturned tooth formed integrally at the outer end of each arm,
said tooth for the longer arm having a centrally disposed notch therein, a bolt non-revolubly mounted in said handle and having its threaded end extending outwardly therefrom, a yieldable line holder mounted on said bolt and means for regulating the tension of said yieldable line holder, said means including a dish-shaped washer slidably mounted upon said bolt and having its convex face presented toward the handle, a nut threadably mounted on said bolt, a fiat washer upon said bolt inwardly of said nut and a compression spring surrounding said bolt and bearing against both washers.
