1 Claim.

This invention relates to safety handles for bath tubs and has for the primary object the provision of grips for aiding a person in entering and leaving a tub so that the danger of a person 5 slipping or falling will be reduced to a minimum and the grips are provided with mountings so that they may be readily applied to tubs. of the conventional type.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of our invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating a bath tub with a safety handle applied thereto and constructed in accordance with our invention.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral l indicates a conventional type of bathtub and of the character which fits closely to the floor and one wall of a bathroom. Mounted to the outer side wall of the tub I is a safety handle forming the subject matter of the present in- 50 vention and consists of a pair of mountings 2 each having extending therefrom an apertured ear 3. Extending through the ears 3 of the mountings 2 is a shaft 4 on which is mounted a grip 5. The threaded ends of the shaft 4 pro- 55 ject beyond the ears 3 and have threaded thereto knobs 6. The grip interposed between the ears and the knobs threaded to the ends of the shaft 4 maintain the device assembled.

Each mounting 2 is of substantially U-shape 00 to fit over the edge of the tub I, as shown in Figure 2. A foot 1 is pivoted to one end of the mounting while the opposite end of said mounting has threaded thereto a stud 8 having swivelly connected thereto a foot 9. The feet 1 and 9 engage inner and outer walls of the tub 5 l and by adjusting the stud 3 the mounting can be firmly secured in place on the tub. The feet 1 and 9 have secured to their gripping faces rubber or similar material.

To apply a grip to the inner side flange of the 10 tub I or the flange located adjacent the wall, as shown in Figure 5, mountings III are provided, each consisting of a shank II to which the apertured ear 3 is formed. One end of the shank is curved, as shown at I2, to engage the tub, as shown in Figure 5, while the opposite end of the shank is formed with a rightangularly extending flange l3 to abut the wall of the room. Formed integrally with the last-named end of the shank H is a hook-shaped element I4 depending from the shank and adapted tofit in a notch formed in the wall of the room and under the flange of the tub. The shank II is recessed, as shown at H3, in which is positioned the foot 9, the stud 8 thereof being threaded to the shank. The foot 9 in this form of mounting cooperates with the hook-shaped element I 4 in firmly securing the mounting to the tub.

In the type of bath tub as suggested in Figure 8 and which when in use is positioned away from the wall of the bath room, grips may be applied to opposite sides thereof by mountings l6 each of which consists of an arcuate-shaped body ll carrying a suitable padding I8 to engage with the flange of the tub. An arm [9 is formed integrally with one end of the body I! and has threaded thereto a stud 20 carrying a foot 2|. The latter engages under the flange of the tub and thereby firmly anchors the body I! in position to the tub.

Referring to our modified form of invention, as shown in Figure 10, each mounting to the grip consists of an arcuate-shaped body 22 to fit over the outer side edge of the type of tub shown in Figure 1 and integral with the body of the mounting 22 is an extension 23 that extends downwardly against the outer wall of the tub and has detachably connected thereto a bracket 24, the latter being secured to the floor of the bathroom.

Having described the invention, we claim:

A safety handle comprising a pair of mountings each of substantially U-shape, a foot pivoted to one end of each mounting, a second foot pivoted and adjustably connected to the other end of each mounting, and a grip connecting said mountings.
