2 Claims.
This invention relates to a masons guide and more particularly to devices for establishing a line between corners of masonry construction by which the mason may be guided in laying subsequent layers of masonry.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a pair of spring tensioned guide line brackets thereto with a section of guide line to establish a masons guide.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a masons guide consisting of an appropriate length of guide line and means affixed to the guide line for tensioning it and holding it in appropriate position on masonry construction.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a bracket adapted to be positioned on a corner of a masonry wall and having means formed therein for snubbing and holding the line used in connection therewith.
The device shown and described herein has been designed to facilitate the placement of a guide line as used in masonry construction work whereby a guide line is positioned from the pre-built corner portions of masonr walls across the area therebetween to form a guide for the laying of masonry units in the formation of a course of masonry thereacross. The device of the invention consists of an appropriately shaped bracket adapted to overlie a corner of the masonry construction and to be retained in such position by means of a guide line stretched between a pair of the devices, one on each corner of the wall area being formed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the masons guide showing one portion thereof in plan view and the other portion thereof in cross section.
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross section of one of the pair of devices comprising the masons guide shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the masons guide illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the masons guide illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a section of masonry wall under construction and illustrating a pair of the masons guides in position thereon holding a guide line therebetween.
By referring to'the drawing and Figure 1 in particular it will be seen that the masons guide consists of a pair of similarly formed, appropriately shaped body members I!) and I I, each of which is provided with an offset portion ItiA and HA, respectively, and each of which is provided with a clamping member i2 and I3, respectively. The clamping members I2 and l3 are affixed to the body members Ii] and II, respectively, by means of screws I4 and I5. Each of the body members it and II is also provided with a channel formed in one side thereof. By referring to the right hand portion of Figure 1 of the drawing the channel may be seen to be axially extending of the body member I! and is indicated by the numeral I E. An inclined passageway I? is also formed in each of the body members and it will be observed that the free end I8 of the clamping member It covers the uppermost end of the inclined passageway I I in a manner so that a guide line such as that indicated by the numeral It! will be held thereby when positioned through the inclined passageway ll in the manner illustrated.
By referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing enlarged detailed views of the body member H, which is identically formed with the body member It], may be seen. It will be observed that when the body members It and I I are operatively positioned on a section of guide line such as that indicated by the numeral I9 and the body members IQ and II positioned in oppositely disposed relation to one another, the guide line I9 will normally lie in the channel It and be snubbed by reason of the angular location of the passageway I? which is formed between the innermost portion of the channel I6 and the opposite side of the body member II and terminates, as heretofore described, beneath the outermost or free end I8 of the clamping member I3. Double snubbing action is imparted to the guide line I9 by the angular positioning of the passageway I! as the guide line I9 is caused to make two abrupt turns over relatively sharp corners. This snubbing action is insured by the holding action imparted to the guide line I9 by the free end I8 of the clamping member I3.
It will thus be seen that when a pair of the body members Ill and It are positioned in operative position on a section of guide line the body members may themselves be positioned on the opposite corner of a masonry construction as illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing.
By referring now to Figure 5 of the drawing it will be observed that a completely finished lower course of masonry units is indicated by the numeral 20 and that on each end thereof partialiy finished corners 2i and 22 have been laid. The body members it! and H have been positioned so that the guide line !9 stretched therebetween serves to hold them upon the corners as their extensions WA and HA, respectively, engage the sides of the corners and the body members if] and II are held in such position by the guide line l9. It will be seen that the guide line is thus forms a horizontal guide for the laying of the subsequent course of masonry units and that when the course is finished the nature of the body members Ii) and ii readily enables them to be released in the guide line sufliciently to permit them to be reinstalled on the next course above. It will be seen that a mason may readily install the guide line through the use of the body members IE! and H, placing one near the end of the guide line bein used and positioning it On the corner as shown in Figure 5 and then subsequently positioning the other body member on the opposite corner, in oppositely disposed relation, and manually tightening the guide line which will be automatically retained in tightened position by the construction of the body members themselves.
It will thus be seen that a simple and efllcient masons guide has been disclosed which may be economically formed and hence widely distributed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A pair of body members and a section of guide line forming a masons guide, each of the body members consisting of a section of material having a projection formed on one end thereof at right angles thereto toform a bracket for engaging a masonry corner, an axially extending channel formed in the said section of material and an angular passageway through said section of material, the said channel and passageway providing for the reception of the said guide line and for snubbing said guide line, a leaf spring affixed to the said section of material and normally engaging the said guide line, so as to hold it against slipping in the passageway to insure the snubbing action.
2. A pair of body members and a section of guide line formin a masons guide, each of the body members consisting of a section of material laying a projection formed on one end thereof at right angles thereto to form a bracket attachable to a masonry corner, an axially extending channel formed in the said section of material and an inclined passageway through said section of material, the said channel and inclined passageway providing for the reception of the said guide line so as to snub the said line thereby, a leaf spring affixed to the said section of material, the free end of the said leaf spring covering the end of the said inclined passageway opposite the said channel so that a guide line positioned therethrough will be held thereby.
