Abstract
Articles of glass, earthenware, or china, are treated to form a silver decoration by means of a transfer formed by printing by the silk screen method with a paste comprising a suspension of silver powder or silver compound such as the oxide or carbonate with a low fusing flux in an organic medium incorporating a plasticizer, e.g., methyl abietate, and/or castor oil. The flux comprises lead monoxide, boric oxide, and silica, and the medium cellulose nitrate or other derivative, in a solvent such as amyl lactate. The transfer applies the design to the article by the "slide off" method, and when applied to a glass article firing takes place at a temperature of 460-540 DEG C. When applied to earthenware or china a higher temperature is used, and less flux. The decoration after firing is polished by known methods, and in some cases the decoration is built up by the electro deposition of silver, or copper and then silver. Finally a layer or rhodium, or chromium, may be deposited electrolytically to prevent tarnishing. Specifications 471,219, [Group XVI], 558,714, 566,643 and 566,718 are referred to.
