Abstract

622,716. Winding webs. DRENT, H. H. March 26, 1947, No. 8223. Convention date, April 1, 1946. Addition to 612,878. [Class 100 (i)] The machine for cutting off measured lengths of paper &c. from a web and winding them to form rolls as described in the parent Specification is constructed with modified means for winding and delivering the measured rolls. The end of a cut web is received in slots 87 in a pair of winding rods 88 which meet at 89 as the leading edge of the web enters the slots 87. The rods 88 are similarly mounted and supported from a side frame 1, only one of which is shown. To wind up the web, the rods 88 are driven by gears 114, 116 operated by a shaft 115 driven by sprocket-wheels 117, 118, the wheel 118 being driven intermittently by a friction clutch 119 from a shaft 57. At the end of the winding operation the gears 116 are stopped by a spring- catch 128 which engages one of two diametrically opposite slots 126, 127 in the gear 116, so as to leave the slots 87 in alignment with the leading edge of the web. The winding rods 88 are then moved laterally so as to free the wound roll and permit it to fall on a delivery table. The rods 88 are splined to their driving-gears and can also slide in bearings 90, each rod 88 being connected by a rod 93 to a sliding rack 94 which is geared by gears 95, 96 to a sliding rack 98, the reciprocating motion of which is magnified by the gears. The racks 98 for the two rods 88 are operated by a common mechanism comprising a pair of levers 99 operated from an eccentric 105 which is driven by a disc 107 when a pawl 111 is released by a detent pin 112 from engaging an internal gear-wheel 110 on a freely mounted chain-wheel 108. The pin 112 is normally controlled by a cam 113 to hold the pawl clear of the gear, and is moved to release the pawl by a lever 56 similarly actuated to the corresponding lever 56 in the parent Specification. This mechanism comprises a control wheel 23 geared to the measuring drum, and a releasable weight 43 which actuates a chain 50 for operating the cutting-mechanism, all as described in the parent Specification, and a cam 135 on the shaft 97 of the gear 23 operates mechanism for throwing in the clutch 119, and for raising the spring-catch 128.
