Abstract

622,259. Presses for separating liquids from solids; filters. HIND, S. R., and MALKIN, E. W. Dec. 4, 1946, No. 35863. [Class 46] A screw press provided with an annular filter surrounding the screw has a gated annulus bedded within the press at the discharge end thereof, providing a restrictive aperture for the passage of clay, or the like, the annulus being distinct and separate from the member or part carrying the normal outlet passage or conduit. Slip is fed through a pipe b into an inlet chamber a<SP>1</SP> and progressed by a screw pug c, which may be in three or more sections having different pitches, to an outlet chamber a<SP>3</SP>. The screw pug c is surrounded by an annular filter e which is composed of filter cloths reinforced by wire mesh or closely interlaced rods, the metallic reinforcement being gapped to permit drainage, and which is held, together with an annular casing a, between end plates a'. The outlet from the screw chamber is restricted by an annulus d bedded within the filter, and having a single small gate d' at the top, the size of the gate being selected to accord with the desired rate of progress of the material and its characteristics. The size of the outlet from the chamber a may be restricted by a ring k. The annulus d is arranged with the gate d' in the upper part of the annular filter e so that any slip present is below the gate and is retained until formed into plastic clay and finally extruded.
