Abstract

1,004,348. Oil/water separator. G. & A. FIRKINS Ltd. May 14, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 46089/62. Heading B1D. A separator for oil and water comprises a primary separating compartment in which oil is separated from water by gravity and a secondary separating compartment into which water leaving the first compartment flows through one or more coagulating filters comprising woven or knitted plastic threads or metallic wires, the total area of the interstices in the filter or filters being not less than nine times the area of the inlet for the oil and water mixture. As shown, oil and water mixture is fed under pressure to inlet 10 controlled by valve 11 into the lower end of funnel-shaped chamber 12 extending upwardly from the bottom of a cylindrical casing 13 into a primary separating chamber 14 formed by a cylindrical shell 15 extending downwardly through the closed upper end of the casing and open at its lower end which terminates short of the bottom of the casing. Most of the oil collects at the top of the funnel-shaped chamber. Any remaining oil and water as a mixture flows over the top of the funnel-shaped chamber and downwardly through the annular space 16 into compartment 17 closed at its upper end by filter 19. Oil particles coagulate in the filter chamber while clear water flows downwardly and is withdrawn though pipe 25. Electronic probes 22, 23 may be used to control valves for removal of oil. Steam or back flushing may be used to clean the filter periodically.
