Abstract
622,240. Centrifugal casting-machines; casting processes. HARVEY, W. G. Sept. 10, 1946, No. 27142. Convention date, May 13. [Class 83 (i)] In a method of casting, in which molten metal is poured into a suspended mould which is then rotated bodily about a vertical axis until the mould is pulled by centrifugal force into a horizontal position which is maintained while the metal sets, the mould comprises a casting cavity, a pressure cavity of at least equal capacity communicating therewith, refractory material insulating both cavities from the atmosphere and a relatively small gate connecting the pressure cavity with the atmosphere at the top of the mould. A mould 2 of refractory material is formed with a casting cavity 3 and a pouring ring 4 communicating by a gate 5 with a space 6 from which additional metal is fed into the cavity 3 to make up for shrinking during cooling. Two such moulds, inserted in baskets 7 are pivotally suspended from the opposite ends of a rotatable arm 11. Molten metal is poured into the mould by gravity while the arm 11 is at rest and the arm is then rotated until the moulds swing up into a horizontal position under centrifugal force so that the metal in the cavity 3 is maintained under pressure while it cools.
