Abstract

[Class 28(i)] [Also in Group XIII] In a water-heating and steam cooking system in which a boiling tank 14 with e.g. an immersion heater 15 supplies steam to cooking wells 37, the tank 14 being replenished with pre-heated water, the pre-heated tank 7 is located on the top of, or within the hot water storage tank 6 of an independent (domestic) hot water system which may include e.g. the usual coal or oil fired boiler or an immersion heater tank. The preheating tank 7 thereby obtains its heat by direct conduction from the independent hot water tank 6. The boiling tank 14 is located above the preheater tank 7 and all is enclosed in a casing 5 with a top cover 2 containing and integral with the cooking wells 37. The casing and cover may also include within the unit an electrically heated oven 1 with grill 3 and hot-plate 4, as well as the independent domestic hot water tank 6, Fig. 1. The preheater tank 7 is supplied with cold water from a feed tank 11 with a ball valve 12 to control the water level therein to keep the tank 7 fully supplied under this head of water pressure. The supply pipe 10 is U-shaped to prevent hot water from flowing up into the tank 11. Under this pressure head the now pre-heated water flows up through a pipe 21 and a closable valve 23, Fig. 4, into the boiling tank 14. A spring 25 biasses the valve 23 to open position. The top of the boiling tank supplies steam through holes 18b and a closable steam valve 22 to a flexible steam pipe 34 with a distributor 35 with shutters to supply the steam to one or more steam cooking wells 37. The valves 22 and 23, Fig. 4, are coupled together by a rod 24 and a linkage 29 operated by a handle or knob 32, Fig. 2, outside the front casing. Normally these valves are kept open by a spring, but to obtain some boiling water from an external draw off spout 39 the knob 32 is turned to close both the steam outlet valve 22 and the water inlet valve 23 whereby the steam now enclosed in the tank 14 generates a pressure to force boiling water up through a pipe 38 in the tank 14 to the spout 39. The spout 39 is above the water level 14a in the tank 14 so that no siphon action occurs, and fully boiling water only is supplied. The pin and slot connection 26 and the spring 25 ensures both valves being closed at the same time. Steam condensed from the cooking wells 37 drains into traps 40, Fig. 5 and is led off through 44a, and a flexible pipe 44b to a funnel 45 and waste pipe 46, all within the casing. The trap 40 has a maintained liquid level 40a. Grease collecting on the walls of 40 can be scraped off and removed by pulling up a cup-shaped scraper 43 and emptying it outside. A plug 41 covers the trap 40. The cooking wells 37 have covers 48 which rest in a groove 47, formed in the top plate forming a water seal for the well with condensed steam lying therein.
