Abstract
502,841. Steam cooking - apparatus ; sterilizing-chambers. CAMPBELL, R. F;, and O'FLANAGAN, J. April 13; 1938, No. 11332. [Classes 28 (i) and 81(i)] A steamer for cooking or sterilizing purposes comprises a water trough 8 extending partially over the area of the bottom of the container 1, a water-supply cistern 14 arranged at a level higher than that of the trough 8, and a float 21 in the trough to regulate the feed from the cistern to the trough. The float 21 is arranged also to regulate the supply of gas to a burner 9, so that, as the level in the trough 8 falls, the water feed thereto is increased and the gas supply to the burner is decreased. The water and gas control valves may be outside the container 1 and operated by links connected with the float, or they may be inside the container, the tapered plug bores of the two valves being co-axially arranged to be engaged by two plugs integrally connected in alignment, the float arm being directly connected to the plug spindle which is turned as the water level varies. A thermostatically controlled 'electric immersion heater 13 is arranged in the trough 8 which is preferably of conical form. The container 1 is surrounded by a lagged casing 3 from which it is separated by an air space 5. The cistern 14 is connected to the water main 15 and the water level is controlled by a ball-cock valve 16. Alternatively, the cistern may be refilled through an aperture 17 in the removable lid 18. The cistern is arranged in the rear upper corner of. the casing and is connected to the trough 8 by a pipe 19 having a capped downward extension 19<1> which serves as a drain and as a trap for solid matter., The steamer may work.at atmospheric pressure or above, the door, in the latter case, being connected by screw means to a hinge, whereby the door may, by adjustment of the screw means, be pressed tightly against its frame. when closed. A, screw or wedge fastening is provided for the side of the door remote from the hinge. If desired, the container 1 may be removed from the stand 32 and placed on an existing stove, range or other source of heat. The steamer may be heated by an oil burner or solely by electricity. A drain cock may be provided in the floor of the container and a relief valve 35 in the top. , A removable tray may be placed above the trough to prevent articles from falling therein.
