Abstract

622,008. Glass-to-metal seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 28, 1947, No. 5845. Convention date, March 1, 1946. [Class 36] A plurality of metal conductors 6 and an outer ring 8 are sealed into a glass body 9 by supporting said metal parts 6, 8 in a fixture 1, supporting the body 9 from one of said metal parts 8 and heating the assembly until the glass flows on its exposed surfaces and settles into its final position without touching the fixture 1. The glass 9 is placed over the conductors 6 so that its flange 11 rests on the annular member 8 and its lower portion rests above flanges 7 on the conductors 6. As the supporting edge 11 softens it is drawn by surface tension and gravity into the cavity between the body 9 and member 8. Similarly, other parts of the softened member 9 settle into the conductors 6 and engage the flanges 7, without touching the fixture 1.
