Abstract

621,857. Bearings. FROST, W., and COOKE, N. April 18, 1946, No. 5030. [Class 12 (i)] A cup and cone ball bearing for supporting a roller wheel or other rotary member is mounted in a support frame by the outer faces of the cones butting at their tops against the top of a vertical recess in each side member of the frame, the co-operating members of the bearing being so arranged that the line of thrust on the balls passes through the point of intersection of the axis of the bearing with the outer end face of the cone, whereby with the side members of the frame being connected by a tie bolt the reactions on the side members of the frame are substantially vertical. A rollerskate wheel 7 is mounted between side members 1, 2 of the skate frame by a cup and cone ball bearing, the cup members 3, 4 of which are held within the wheel bore by their inner ends being flanged and embraced by the bent-up ends of a short tube 8. The race portion of the cup is in axial section curved to a radius slightly larger than the radius of the balls from a centre lying on a line drawn from the axis of the bearing at a point adjacent the outer end face of the cone. The race portion of the cone is shaped in axial section to give two contact points disposed on a chord line of the ball passing through the bearing axis. The cones 5, 6 are held on a central tube 9 with bent-up ends. The end faces of the cones have flats 5a, 6a which are received in recesses 10 formed in the side members of the frame and the bearing is retained by passing a tie bolt 11 through the central tube 9 and apertures in the frame members and affixing a lock-nut 12; the mouths of the recesses 10 are splayed slightly to facilitate entry of the bearing members. Specification 621,858, [Group XV], is referred to.
