Abstract

621,365. Frictional lighters. DIXON, H. B. L. Feb. 21, 1947, No. 5197. [Class 75(iii)] A frictional lighter is provided with an operating number hinged at one end to a pivoted wick cap and at the other end to a. pivoted cam, such that on depressing said member against the resistance of a spring bearing on said cam both the cap and the friction wheel are operated, the extent to which the member is depressed determining whether, when the pressure is removed, the cap returns to its initial position or is held clear of the wick until the member is again moved. A wick cap hand a friction wheel, to which is fixed a ratchet wheel j engaged by a spring-pressed pawl m provided inside the cap, are mounted on a pivot g between lugs f on the top of the lighter body a. One end of a flat link n is hinged at n<SP>1</SP> to the cap h above the pivot g, the other end of the link which is cranked being hinged at n<SP>2</SP> to a . cam o pivoted at o<SP>l</SP> between lugs p on the top of the body a. The free end of a leaf spring r fixed at r<SP>1</SP> to the top of the body a, bears on the bottom of the cam, normally maintaining it vertical and the link n in a raised horizontal position with the cap h over the wick. The leaf spring r may be replaced by a coil spring. By pressing down the link n the cap h is raised- and the friction wheel rotated. If the pressure is removed before the pivot n<SP>1</SP> passes below the pivot g, the link and cap are returned automatically to their initial positions by the spring r. If the pressure is continued until the pivot n<SP>1</SP> passes below the pivot g the cap h will be held in its raised position until light pressure is applied to the cranked end of the link so that the pivot n<SP>1</SP> is raised past the pivot g. The body a is divided by a vertical partition a<SP>1</SP> with compartments a<SP>2</SP>, a<SP>3</SP> for cotton-wool and petrol respectively, a conical passage b<SP>1</SP> in the partition being controlled by a horizontal needle valve b which is adjusted by rotating a screw b3 in the wall a4 of the compartment a2. The petrol compartment a3 has on one or both sides of it a transparent panel a<SP>5</SP>, which, if the body a is made of synthetic plastic, may be moulded in position. A removable wick tube e is provided with a head e<SP>2</SP> through which the wick projects and which closes an aperture in the top of the body a, through which, when the wick tube is removed, the coton-wool compartment can be charged.
