Abstract

620,812. Bearings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WHIBLEY, R. H. Jan. 27, 1947, No. 2462. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a bearing for concentric tubes the tubes are axially located relative to each other solely by a ring of balls adapted to run between concentrically opposing grooves carried by the tubes in the overlapping portions, the grooves are centred on the common axis of the tubes so as to form a ball-bearing permitting relative rotation but preventing relative axial, displace - ment of the tubes, and at least part of the inner tube is a close and gas-tight fit within the outer tube. Fig. 1 shows two metal tubes 1, 2, the tube 1 being reduced in diameter at its end 8 so as to fit closely in the tube 2 to form a substantially gas-tight joint while allowing relative rotation. Tube 2 has an enlarged end 3 which carries the outer race 4 of a ball bearing having balls 5 and a ball cage 6. The inner race 7 is a tight push fit on the end 8 of tube 1. A flange 9 is provided on the tube 1 to complete the enclosure of the bearing.
