Abstract

619,742. Electric coils. BRITISH THOMSON HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1946, No. 37776. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1945. [Class 35] A spool-wound electric coil is wrapped in a sheet of impervious material which forms a container which is filled with a solventless fluid impregnant polymerizable to form an insulating solid. As shown, the spool, which may be of metal, fibre, &c., comprises a tubular body 1 on which is wound an absorbent fibrous covering, 4 of paper &c., and a pair of end cheeks 2, 3, an insulating washer 5 being inserted if the flange 3 is of metal. A thin insulating impervious resin washer 6 which rests on the washer 5 has its inner edge turned up to fit the spool and its outer edge turned up and cemented to a sheet 9 of the same material wound on the coil. In this way a cup is formed into which the insulating substance is poured through apertures 10 and an absorbent washer 7, which serves to retain impregnant to compensate for drainage or settling during baking. Examples of suitable insulating fluids which polymerize on baking to solid forms, without change of volume, are given. The coil may be finished by an armouring layer 11 of enamelled glass tape which also holds the terminals 8a.
