Abstract

619,679. Sound transmitting and receiving devices. SUBMARINE SIGNAL CO. March 18, 1946, No. 8299. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1941. [Class 40 (iv)] A piezo-electric vibrator comprises an elongated element 1 having mounted in its sides piezo-electric crystals 10, 11, 12 and 13, successive crystals along the vibrator at any instant of operation being arranged to vibrate in opposite phase by suitable arrangement of the electrodes or crystals. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the oscillator 651 imparts opposing polarity to similarly disposed pairs of crystals which thus vibrate in opposed phase. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the oscillator supplies a similar phase of current to each crystal pair, but one pair of crystals is physically reversed with respect to the other. The electrodes on the crystals are extended by ribbons 22.to bus-wires 23 which are connected to a bus-bar 30<SP>1</SP>. All the units are mounted in grooves in a plate 2 which is provided with a thin section 3 so that it may vibrate piston manner and communicate its vibration to water that is in contact with plate 2. In modifications, the units 1 may be lengthened to contain a greater number of vibrating crystals and they may be secured at both top and bottom to vibrating diaphragms. Specifications 595,154 and 597,421 are referred to.
