Abstract

814,123. Piezo-electric crystals. POSTMASTER GENERAL. May 25, 1956 [March 18, 1955], No. 8029/55. Class 40 (8). A piezo-electric or ferro-electric crystal element, e.g. of quartz, ethylene diamine tartrate, barium titanate or Rochelle salt, has cantilever arms which extend symmetrically from a common portion and means for exciting the arms into vibration in a flexural mode, the arms being so constructed and arranged that all the reactions in the region of the common portion are substantially balanced. The element may be of H-form cut from a rectangular quartz plate, the normal of which is rotated 5 degrees from the Z axis of the parent crystal towards the Y axis, the breadth being parallel to the X axis. The crystal is supported by terminals T1, T2 near its centre of gravity which connect with silvered electrodes, and by which the element is excited to vibrate in a flexural mode of frequency 2,676 kc./second at 20‹ C. The electrodes are disposed on the faces of the crystal and are indicated by shading in the drawings. The inner surfaces of the arms may also carry electrodes if desired. In an alternative construction the cross-section of each arm of an H-element increases with distance from the bridge-piece, so that the element vibrates at a lower frequency, viz. 1,930 kc./second at 20 ‹ C. In a further construction the element is of zig-zag form as illustrated in Fig. 2, or may have arms with more zig-zag bends than shown in that Figure. Alternatively, the element may comprise two C-shaped members arranged back to back, or may be of H-shape with lateral saw-cuts in the bridge portion, or may comprise symmetrically arranged cantilevers loaded at their free ends.
