Abstract
619,502. Preparing fibres for spinning. WALLER, C. A. Oct. 22, 1945, No. 27763. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 22, 1945] [Class 120(i)] Textile fibres are produced from vegetable fibre material, particularly bast fibre material such as flax, hemp, jute or ramie, by removing the bulk of the non-fibrous substances by a mechanical treatment such as scutching, followed by a chemical treatment with an alkaline lye such as sodium hydroxide, washing the fibres or neutralizing them with a weakly acidulous solution, and, after removal of the greater part of the liquid, extracting the moist fibres with an organic solvent, which is finally recovered from the fibres. The fibrous mass may be subjected to a bleaching treatment, e.g. with a hypochlorite or peroxide, after the treatment with the lye, or chlorine may be passed into the material from which the lye has been only par- .tially removed. The organic solvent may be acetone, methanol. ethanol, propanol, diacetone alcohol or a mixture: of these, and after extraction the remainder may be removed by evaporation, or in the case of higher boiling solvents, by extraction with a lower boiling solvent such as acetone or ether.
