619,154. Packing. HUMBER, Ltd., and GRIMSHAW, G. E. Oct. 18, 1946, No. 31012. [Class 94 (i)] A carton for packing an elongated object having enlarged portions at itsends, such as an engine connecting-rod, or an object constituted by a pair of oppositely-disposed poppet valves or the like, each having a head at one end, is formed from a flat strip of flexible material having an elongated hole (or two such holes in the case of poppet valves or the like) 12 between its ends, and longitudinal slits 15 from the ends, communicating with holes 17, 18 to receive the respective ends of the object inwardly of the enlarged portions, and four creases 20 towards each end about which the carton ends can be folded into rectangles, with the slit extremities 15 lying between the intermediate part 22 of the carton and the respective enlarged portions. As applied to poppet valves, Fig. 4, one of the slit extremities at each end is adapted to engage a groove 28 in the respective valve stem. The flexible material may be of cardboard, light-gauge sheet-metal, or plastic material, and a number of the cartons may be integrally joined. The carton may also be applied to the packing of socket or ball-ended links.
