Abstract

619,150. Operating clutches. PRACHAR, C. Sept. 27, 1946, No. 28995. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] The engaging stroke of a motor vehicle clutch is regulated by a hydraulic or pneumatic dashpot 1 having a piston 2 with an undercut bore 7 interacting with a projection 4 on the floor of the dashpot cylinder in such a manner that the clutch moves up to engagement quickly, engages slowly and then rapidly completes its stroke. The dashpot is shown connected between the clutch pedal 21 and the motor frame 18, but may be arranged between the frame and an intermediate point in the clutchoperating linkage. Movement of the pedal 21 downwards to disengage the clutch is allowed freely by one-way ball valves such as 8 in the piston head. Upon movement of the pedal 21 upwards the operative oil or other fluid at first passes freely to the upper side of the piston through the bore 7 and passages 6 until, at the point of clutch engagement, the cylindrical head of the projection 4 enters the registering neck 5 of the bore 7 which is then in communication with the lower side of the piston only through a bleed passage 9, adjustable by a screw 11 to control the rate of clutch engagement. When the clutch is fully engaged, the undercut conical part of the projection 4 comes opposite the neck 5 and allows a rapid completion of the stroke. A screwed connection 15 allows the position of the piston 2 to be adjusted relative to the dashpot cylinder to vary the cut-off point.
