618,645. Making sleeve valves. JACK & HEINTZ PRECISION INDUSTRIES, Inc. Nov. 7, 1946 No. 33095. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1945. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging.-A method of making a steel article comprises nitriding the steel and then hot forging to the required form. As applied to the manufacture of semi-cylindrical sliding sleeve valves for internal-combustion engines, blanks are stamped out from strip stock, ground and cold worked to form oversized parts which are then nitrided at a high temperature in neutral or a hydrogen atmosphere for a time sufficient to give relatively deep penetration, and are then forged to exact size over a water-cooled, hardened and polished steel die. The valve parts are then de-scaled if necessary, the insides are honed and the outsides superfinished.
