618,436. Core-making machines. OSTERMAN, O., and BLENDIN, E. April 4, 1946, No. 10403. Convention date, March 29, 1944. [Class 83 (i)] An independently portable sand-holding cartridge for interposition between an air reservoir 6, having a discharge port controlled by an air valve 14, and a core-box C and supporting platform, comprises a charge-holding body portion 27 shaped so as to keep the sand concentrated, and a short base portion 28 of increased width for spanning the core-box C, said base portion being provided with an opening or openings for registering with the opening or openings in a particular core-box or series of core-boxes. The cylindrical body portion 27 preferably contains just enough sand to fill the core-box and is filled by hand from a conveniently placed heap. The air reservoir 6 is capable of vertical movement by operation of a handle 10 through a rack 7 and a pinion 8, thus allowing the container to be gripped between the core-box and the bottom of the reservoir where it seats on the sealing-ring 31. Opening of the valve 14, Fig. 5, which in a preferred construction has a flange 18 normally held closed on a gasket 20 by air pressure and a spring 21 and opened by hand operation of a handle 22 through a valve stem 24, forces sand through openings 29 in the base 28 of the container and into the core-box cavities 25. Sand containers are made to fit any type, size or shape of core-box, the machine set up remaining unchanged. The machine is stated to be suitable for the use of sand with a moisture content of from two to five per cent.
