Abstract
A tack-imparting ingredient for a plastic vulcanizable rubber, particularly butadienestyrene copolymers, and polybutadiene rubber, comprises an admixture of a para alkyl-substituted phenolic sulphide and a metallic salt of an organic carboxylic acid containing between 10 and 25 carbon atoms. The sulphide is preferably prepared by reacting either sulphur mono-chloride or sulphur dichloride with a phenol having the formula <FORM:0618426/IV(a)/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals and R3 is an alkyl radical containing at least three carbon atoms. Suitable phenols are p-tert.-amyl-, p-propyl-, p-tert.-butyl-, p-sec.-hexyl-, p-phenyl-, p-octyl-, p-cyclohexyl-, p-(4-tolyl)-, p-cumyl-, p-(4-tert.-butyl-phenyl)-, 3.5-dimethyl-4-tert.-butyl-, 3-ethyl-4-heptyl-, 4-lauryl-, 4-decyl-, 4-sec.-butyl-, 4-n-butyl-, 4-n-amyl-, 3-methyl-4-tert.-amyl-, and 4-di-isobutyl-phenols, and also 4-tert.-butyl-m-cresol. The organic acid component of the metallic salt may be a resin acid, a high molecular weight fatty acid or a mixture of tall oil acids such as abietic, lauric or stearic acid. The metals of these salts are preferably sodium or potassium but may be zinc, iron or calcium. The tack-imparting ingredients may be added to the latex together with other softeners such as coal tar products, pine tar, petroleum oils, gums and oils from wood and pinene mercaptans, and also carbon black.ALSO:A tack-imparting ingredient for a plastic vulcanizable rubber, particularly butadiene-styrene copolymers, polybutadiene rubber, and reclaimed rubbers, comprises an admixture of a para alkyl substituted phenolic sulphide and a metallic salt of an organic carboxylic acid containing between about 10 and 25 carbon atoms. The sulphide is preferably prepared by reacting either sulphur mono-chloride or sulphur dichloride with a phenol having the formula <FORM:0618426/V/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals and R3 is an alkyl radical containing at least three carbon atoms. Suitable phenols are p.-tert.-amyl-, p.propyl-, p.tert.-butyl-, p.-sec.-hexyl-, p.phenyl-, p.octyl-, p.cyclohexyl-, p-(4-tolyl)-, p.cumyl-, (p.(4-tert.-butylphenyl)-, 3.5-dimethyl-4-tert, butyl-3-ethyl-4-heptyl-, 4-lauryl-, 4-decyl-, 4-sec-butyl-, 4-n-butyl-, 4-n-amyl-, 3-methyl-4-tert.-amyl-, and p 4-disobutyl-, phenols and also 4-tert.-butyl-m-cresol. The organic acid component of the metallic salt may be a resin acid, a high molecular weight fatty acid or a mixture of tall oil acids such as abietic, lauric or stearic acid. The metals of these salts are preferably sodium or potassium but may be zinc, iron or calcium. The tack-imparting ingredients may be added to the latex together with other softeners such as coal tar products, pine tar, petroleum oils, gums and oils from wood and pinene mercaptans, and also carbon black.
