Abstract

Compositions comprise a thermoplastic organic compound and up to 25 per cent by weight of the composition (preferably 0.25 per cent to 10 per cent) of glass fibres having a diameter from 0.00001 to 0.000050 inches and length less than 40 times, but preferably greater than twice, the diameter uniformly dispersed therein. Thermoplastic compounds specified are cellulose ethers and esters, e.g. ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-butyrate; polyvinyl resins, e.g. polystyrene; polyallyl resins; polyacrylic and methacrylic resins, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate; polyethylene; and nylons, e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide, sebacamide, and suberamide, polytetramethylene adipamide and sebacamide, polymerised 6-aminocaproic and 9-aminononanoic acids. Plasticisers, fillers, colouring matter and solvents may also be present. In examples, compositions comprise (1), (2) cellulose acetate, glass fibres, barium sulphate, ethyl alcohol, acetone and water; (3) polyhexamethylene sebacamide; (4) polymethyl methacrylate, or (5) polymethylene adipamide and glass fibres.
