Abstract

618,014. Book rests. HODGES, D. I. Oct. 14, 1946, No. 30572. [Class 52 (iii)] A reading desk comprising a book support 34 having a back 44 secured thereto is provided at each end with a spigot 40 either one of which may be clamped in the end of a tube 33 projecting laterally from a bracket 15 mounted on a pillar 10 having a base 13. To the front of the book support is mounted a. lamp holder 47 having its window 48 so arranged as to direct the light rearwardly and upwardly towards the book mounted on the support 34, the lamp holder 47 having lugs 52 in which are slidabiy mounted fingers 53 for engaging the open book. The bracket 15 is rotatably mounted on a sleeve surrounding the pillar 10 which sleeve is provided with a lower spherical split end which enables it to be clamped to the pillar at the desired height. If desired a writing slope may be mounted under the book support either fixedly or adjustably, a second window directing the light of the lamp 50 upon such slope. The pillar 10 may be additionally provided with a table top 18 having a rim 19 and an ashtray 20. Other articles may be combined with the table top. Instead of being mounted on the pillar 10 the book rest &c. may be mounted on furniture such as armchairs, bookshelves or attached to a wall by means of brackets which may be adjustable.
