Abstract

617,792. Magnetic materials. JOHNSON, L. July 30, 1946, No. 22613. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Relates to the detection of cracks in ferrous metals by magnetizing the metal and coating it with a liquid in which magnetic particles are suspended so that they are retained in the cracks; according to the invention, the magnetic particles consist of magnetic iron oxide which have been subjected to prolonged heat treatment to increase their permeability. Preferably, they are heated to 250-350‹ C. for about six hours. Specification 502,973, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
