Abstract

617,739. Line-carrying rockets. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32173. [Classes 9 (ii) and 77] A rocket comprising a front casing 1 and a rear casing 7 axially movable relative to each other has a propellent composition in each casing, means being provided to ensure substantially simultaneous ignition of each composition. Secured to the rear of the front casing 1 is a collar fastened to which are sleeves 3 carrying rods 4. The rods 4 are slidable in sleeves 5 fixed to a collar 6 on the front end of the rear casing 7, the movement of the rods being limited by stops 8. The collar on the rear casing has two additional sleeves 9 carrying rods 10 hinged to a bridle 11 for the attachment of a line. To fire the rocket the bridle 11 is bent away from the rods 10 and the rear casing 7 inserted in the barrel of a discharger containing a cartridge, the collar 6 of the rear casing abutting against the end of the barrel and the rods 4, 10 being outside the barrel. On firing the cartridge, the flash from it ignites the propellent composition 20 in the rear casing and at the same time passes along an axial passage 24 through the plugs and composition of the rear casing to ignite the propellent composition 14 in the front casing. The rocket then moves forward with the casings spaced apart by the rods 4 (see Fig. 2). The gases from the burning propellants escape through apertures in the plugs and chokes at the rear of each casing. In an alternative arrangement, the rear casing slides within an apertured extension of the front casing, an annular abutment at the end of the extension engaging with plates at the front of the rear casing to limit its movement. Instead of filling the casings with a propellant burning outwards, a pressed cylinder of propellant may be inserted spaced from the walls of the casings by projections or spiders. Ignition may be from the flash of a cartridge, the flash passing through the annular space around the propellant in the rear casing to ignite the composition in the forward casing. Alternatively, a fuze may be led from the propellant in the forward casing through the annular space in the rear casing and joined to a fuze from the second propellant, both fuzes being ignited simultaneously.
