[Class 60] A granule-coated web comprises a backing such as paper or cloth and granular particles attached thereto by an adhesive layer having a different degree of cure at the exposed surface and adjacent to the backing. The adhesive, which may be a heat-hardening phenol-, urea-, or melamine-aldehyde resin, or alkyd resin, e.g. glycerol phthalate, glycol succinate resin, may be substantially completely cured at and near the exposed surface, and partly cured and softer near the backing. The adhesive may be cured by radiant heat, e.g. infra-red radiation, the different degrees of cure being obtained by reason of absorbing or reflecting fillers present in or added to the adhesive, such as carbon black, iron oxide, slate dust, aluminium bronze flakes, or the impurities present in cheap, commercial forms of resinous adhesive. The adhesive may be translucent to infra-red rays, and the backing shielded from the rays by means of a presize coat of adhesive containing an absorber, such as carbon black or iron oxide, or a reflector such as aluminium bronze, or a mixture. Before treatment with radiant heat, the granulecoated web may be heated in an oven to remove solvents and partly cure the resin. The web may also be subjected to a high-frequency alternating electric field.
