Abstract

616,777. Electromagnets. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 28, 1946, No. 35355. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1944. [Class 35] The plunger-type armature of an electromagnet is supported concentrically within the coil by resilient arms extending radially from the axis of the plunger to the coil frame. As shown, the energizing coil 1 has annular pole members 3 or 4 at each end, the magnetic circuit being completed by an outer ring 5. The armature which is supported on a discshaped spring 11 fixed by bolts 17 to the coil frame, has ring-shaped poles 7, 8 corresponding to the stationary poles. The spring discs 11 have pieces cut away leaving radial spokes 12, 13, 14, each having an arcuate portion 12a. The armature, which is shown in the deenergized position and moves to the right when energized, has a threaded bolt 25 for adjusting its engagement with the device to be operated. The electromagnet may be used to operate hydraulic valves, the fluid being permitted to enter its casing.
