Abstract

616,705. Mop-wringing pails. SMITH, R. Feb. 21, 1946, No. 5517. [Class 19] A pail 10 has a wooden or other fixed roller 11 journalled in lugs attached to the side walls of the pail and a parallel movable roller 13 is journalled in the ends of two upwardly extending arms 14 of a rocker member which also comprises two arms 16 connected to the arms 14 by means of rivets, the other ends of arms 16 being connected by a treadle 17. The arms 14 are pivoted at 15 on the sides of the pail and their ends are clear of the top of the pail. Each arm 16 has one end of a torsion spring 18 associated therewith, said spring being mounted on the pivot 15 and having the other end fixed at 19 to the side wall of the pail. Below the space normally presented between the rollers there is mounted a platform 20 having a central ridge 25 which is preferably at right angles to the axes of the rollers. In operation the spring 18 pulls up on the arms 16 and keeps the movable roller 13 spaced away from the fixed roller 11 so as to admit the passing of a mop down between the rollers, the spacing being determined by the journals of the movable roller engaging the top edges of the sides of the pail. The mop is now inserted down between the rollers on to the central ridge which parts and spreads the mop and the user then presses down the treadle 17 against the action of the spring, the mop thus being gripped between the rollers and the water expressed by pulling the mop upwards. The handle 21 is attached to lugs 22 secured to the pail and is cranked so that when folded down it rests on top of the walls at the ends of the pail. According to the Provisional Specification the torsion spring may be replaced by a tension spring one end of which is connected to the bottom limb of the rocker member and the other end hooked over or attached to the top of the end of the pail and it is stated that the handle may be attached to the outer ends of horizontal straps which are cranked in and are attached to the sides of the pail beyond the position which the movable roller normally assumes.
