Abstract

616,486. Universal joints. BOTTERILL, W. H. Sept. 6, 1946,No. 26828. [Class 80 (ii)] In a Hooke's joint, trunnion pins on the driving and driven members are free to rotate and slide in radial channels in a coupler formed of two members of resilient sheet material clamped together. As shown in the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification, applied to a universal joint having its driving and driven members electrically insulated from each other, trunnion-ended sleeves 1, 1a, secured by grub screws to the shaft ends to be coupled, have mutually perpendicular radial pins 4d slidably received in electrically insulating sleeves 5d which have line contact with, and are free to slide and rotate in, opposed V- grooves in resilient rings 6a, 6b maintained in position by tubular rivets 8b passing through spacing washers 7b. The sleeves 5d are formed of ebonite, vulcanite, synthetic resin, ceramic material or some other hard substance so as to ensure low frictional resistance between the sleeves and rings. The rings 6a, 6b are preferably of pressed steel or phosphor bronze, the rivets 8b being placed midway between the V-grooves to allow maximum resilience: The rivets may be replaced by screws, bolts or eyelets, and the spacing washers 7b may be omitted. The joint is applicable in radio receivers or like electrical apparatus to couple chassis mounted potentiometers, variable condensers or other variable components to panelmounted control knobs.
