Abstract

Filtered crude or partially purified aqueous streptomycin-containing solutions, derived from a fermentation process utilizing an organism of the genus Actinomyces, are acidified to pH 0.5-4.5 (preferably 1.0-2.5) and maintained thereat at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. (preferably not exceeding 60 DEG C.) until an increase in antibiotic potency has been effected, and thereafter the augmented amount of streptomycin is separated from solution. The treatment with acid is preferably terminated (e.g. by adjusting the pH of the solution to about 7) at or about the moment when the maximum antibiotic potency is attained, the time required to reach this point depending on the degree of acidity and the temperature employed. The acidification may be effected with sulphuric acid (preferred), hydrochloric acid or weaker acids such as acetic acid.
