Abstract

616,353. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 31, 1946, No. 3091. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1945. [Class 39 (i)] A magnetic deflecting device for a cathode-ray tube comprises a plurality of pairs, e.g. two pairs, of coils, each coil having sides and ends and the sides being conductor bundles of substantially uniform crosssection, the bundles being arranged adjacent to one another to provide an annulus, Figs. 1, 2, and insulating spacers 31, 32, 33, 34 being provided between adjacent pairs of coils. The spacers may be of wood or synthetic resin and are suitably dimensioned to position the coils so as to reduce or otherwise control pincushion and barrel distortion and to reduce " cross-talk." One end of each of the coils 16, 17 is recessed at 27 so as to receive the flared portion of the cathode-ray tube. Retaining rings 36, 37 each made in two parts fitted together fit against the opposite upturned ends of the coils 22 and also serve as mountings for the coil terminals. A plurality of layers of iron wire 43 are wound over the coil sides, preferably with the interposition of layers of paper or reconstituted cellulose 46; the iron wire 43 is preferably grounded on the bar 60. Either the longer or the shorter pair of coils may provide the. horizontal deflection. The coils may be wound and formed simultaneously by the arrangement described in Specification 604,735, [Group IX].
