Abstract
616,032. Cooling towers. NORTHMET POWER CO., and WOOTTON, W. R. Aug. 21, 1946, No. 24926. [Class 64(i)] A cooling tower is provided with means for altering the draught therethrough when the ambient temperature varies, the object being to prevent excessive precipitation during cold weather. A naturaldraught tower may be provided with obturating means such as roller blinds 3 arranged around the air intake belt 2 of the tower. Ganged louvres or sliding shutters may also be used or a curtain of falling water may be employed. Alternatively, the obturating means may comprise dampers mounted at the outlet of the tower. The obturating means may be manually - controlled or automaticallyoperated. In a forced-draught tower (Fig. 5) the speed of the fans 25 is controlled by a relay system triggered by a rain gauge 29 which measures the precipitation at the top of the tower. The gauge includes a pivoted spoon 32 having contacts 35, 36 at one end. When the spoon fills, it tips and closes the contacts, thus operating the relay system energising the fan motors. The contents of the spoon are discharged by tipping and the contacts break. The fans therefore operate by a series of surges, the frequency of which depends on the rate of precipitation of moisture from the air leaving the tower.
