Abstract

Polyamides are prepared by heating equimolecular proportions of terephthalic acid and bis-(3-aminopropyl)-ether or bis-(3-aminopropoxy) ethane, or a low molecular weight product formed from these ingredients until filaments formed from the molten product can be cold-drawn to fibres. Amide-forming derivatives of the ingredients may be used. A monofunctional amide-forming ingredient may be included in the mixture as in Specification 495,790. Heating is usually at 200-300 DEG C. in absence of oxygen. Water is removed. The pressure may be reduced. Filaments may be formed from the molten products. They may be cold-drawn by conventional means. Heat may be supplied to facilitate drawing. A size or lubricating agent may also be applied. Examples 1, 2, 3 describe the production of polymers, and Example 4 gives a detailed account of the melt spinning of a polymer and the drawing of the resultant filaments to fibres. Specifications 487,734, 527,532 and 574,713 also are referred to.
