Abstract

Polyamides having enhanced water absorption properties and increased elasticity, are prepared by heating in the molten state, at amide-forming temperatures, a mixture of at least two pre-formed synthetic linear polyamides, at least one being soluble in water, and at least one being insoluble in water, heating being continued until a homogeneous blend is obtained. The blend usually contains 5-80 per cent by weight of the water-soluble component, and temperatures of 180 DEG C.-320 DEG C. are used. Heating is preferably continued until a product is obtained from which, on solidification, not more than 10 per cent of the soluble component can be selectively extracted by prolonged solvent treatment. Many starting polyamides are specified, and examples are given of the preparation of melt blends from: (1) polyhexamethylene adipamide and polytriglycol adipamide; (2) polyhexamethylene adipamide and N-methyl polytriglycol adipamide; and (3) N-methyl polytriglycol adipamide and an interpolymer of hexamethylenediammonium adipate hexamethylenediammonium sebacate and epsilon-caprolactam. The products may be cold rolled or cold drawn, and treated with swelling agents such as water or short chain aliphatic alcohols, and may be used in the production of films, filaments, yarns and fabrics. Such fabrics, by exposure to steam, acquire considerable elasticity and anticrease properties. Specifications 474,999, 501,527 and 535,138 are referred to.
