Abstract
In an abrasive article, e.g. a grinding or lapping wheel, in which diamond particles are bonded in a sintered metal or alloy, smearing of the bond metal over the diamonds, and welding of particles abraded from the work piece, to the bond, are prevented by adding one or more of graphite, talc, soapstone, slate and molybdenum sulphide to the bond metal powder. The metal bond may include copper, bronze, brass, zinc, nickel, iron, the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Monel Metal" and hard metals such as tungsten carbide. The diamond particles may be coated by a metal film as described in Specification 614,396, [Group XXII], prior to being mixed with the metal powder and the graphite &c. powder, and pressed in a die with or without heat. The diamond-containing powder may be pressed with a layer of metal powder containing no diamonds, the whole then being sintered. A backing of metal or plastic can be attached by known methods, or the backing may be formed of pressed metal powders. As an example, a bronze powder (10 per cent tin) or an equivalent amount of powdered copper and tin, is added to 2 to 3 per cent (not more than 5 per cent) by weight of powdered graphite and 15 to 40 per cent (not more than 60 per cent) by volume of diamond powder. The mixture is spread evenly on the bottom of a steel die set, and is covered with a thicker layer of bronze powder containing no abrasive, but containing an inert material so that the shrinkage of the layer is decreased to that of the diamond-containing layer, thereby avoiding distortion during sintering. Alternately the composition of the metal powder can be chosen to obtain the correct shrinkage.
