Abstract

615,540. Universal joints. METALASTIK, Ltd., and HIRST, A. J. Jan. 3, 1946, No. 309. [Class 80 (ii)] A resilient coupling for shafts comprises at least three conical metal sleeves 1, 2, 3, coaxially nested together, the annular interspaces so formed being filled with rubber inserts 4, 5 or like resilient material, the coupling being provided with means between adjacent end parts of the inner and outer sleeves beyond the resilient material for effecting relative angular movement of the sleeves to pre-stress the resilient material in shear and compression. As shown, the sleeves 1, 3 are bolted to a rigid ring 8 secured to the driving shaft. The sleeve 2 is secured to the driven shaft by rings 10, 12 and bolts 13. The rubber may be bonded to the sleeves. In the event of failure of the rubber a direct drive is taken by tongues 15 which engage slots in the ring 18.
