Abstract

Sulphur dioxide is recovered from sulphuric acid sludge obtained in the treatment of hydrocarbons by a process including the steps of mixing one part by weight of the sludge with at least two parts by weight of discrete solid carrier particles to distribute a film of sludge on the individual particles, the temperature of the mixture being below that of the active decomposition of the sludge, but not exceeding 325 DEG F., and thereafter heating the mixture to a temperature between 340 DEG F. and 600 DEG F. A preferred range of temperature for the initial mixture is 150-300 DEG F. Suitable carrier materials are granular coke, diatomaceous earth, or preferably the carbonaceous residue produced in the process. The process is preferably continuous, the sludge being mixed with the carbonaceous residue of the process in a horizontal cylindrical mixing chamber, the mixture being passed to a stirred and indirectly-heated horizontal cylindrical decomposer and a part of the residue being returned to the first step through a vertical elevator. Specifications 398,023, 443,452 and 443,800 are referred to.
