Abstract

614,637. Portable turning-apparatus. POLLARD, A. F. C., and VARNEY, Ltd., D. Jan. 7, 1946, No. 593. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] Clamping means are provided for the saddle of a lathe, optical bench, &c., whereby a force is applied to the slide at such a point that no couple is introduced by the clamping action to upset the position of the saddle on the slide. In one form, wherein the slide 1 is an optical bench, the saddle 12 carrying an optical element by a boss 13 and stem 15 is provided with five screws, two of which 19, 20 are adjustably carried by plates 21 in recesses in the saddle for taking up wear, and are adapted to be locked by set screws 22 as described in Specification 614,635, [Group XXV]. These adjustable screws respectively bear on the surfaces 7, 10 of the slide, while two fixed screws engage the surface 8 as at 16 and the third fixed screw engages the surface 10, the surface 8 being co-planar with the surface 7. The clamping force is applied to the surface 11, which is perpendicular to the surface 10, through a beam 24 pivoted at 25 on the saddle and held in force applying position by a toggle 26, 28 ; removal of the clamping force is effected by movement of a lever handle 29. The slide may be trapezoidal in section and the saddle channel-shaped ; the slide may also have the forms of an X or a. triangle in section and may comprise three parallel contiguous cylinders or two parallel cylinders, which may be contiguous or in spaced relation. As applied to a goniometer, the slide may comprise a cylindrical surface bounded by plane end surfaces, the saddle which is movable thereover carrying a slide having another cylindrical surface of smaller radius whose axis is orthogonal to the former cylindrical surface ; this latter slide has slidable thereover a style carriage and the axes of the two cylinders are adjusted so that they intersect orthogonally at the tip of the style by adjustment of the saddle.
