Abstract
614,274. Guards for engine air intakes. ELLIOTT, A. G. July 9, 1946, No. 20524. [Class 4] A guard grid for the inlet of an engine air intake is curved or bent to project forwardly from a pair of opposite edges of the intake. Fig. 1 shows a circular grid 14 for the intake of a gas turbine 12 mounted in a nacelle 10, the grid being of approximately spherical crosssection. The grid is mounted on lugs 16 leaving an annular space 17 for the admission of air in the event of the grid being obstructed by an accumulation of ice or snow. Fig. 3 shows an elongated grid 22 mounted on the leading edge of a wing 20 and curved to conform thereto, gaps 24 being provided at the upper and lower edges. The grid may be insulated from the aircraft structure and electric current passed through it, to heat the incoming air or to melt accumulated ice or snow.
