Abstract

760,513. Gas turbine plant. NORTHROP AIRCRAFT, Inc. April 20, 1954, No. 11336/54. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A gas turbine engine mounted in an aircraft has the intake opening of the engine mounted adjacent to but spaced from the outlet opening of an air intake duct of the aircraft and resilient material attached to one of the openings and spaced from the other in such a manner that the material is moved into contact with the other by expansion of the engine. One arm of a flexible, circular, U-shaped ring 5 is attached to the intake casing 3 of the compressor by bolts passing through a flange 13 and a metal reinforcing ring 12 moulded in the ring. The other arm has an outwardly extending head 10 reinforced by a metal cable which extends forwardly towards a contact ring 15 mounted around the outlet opening of the aircraft intake duct 2. When the engine is cool it draws air through the duct 2 and through openings in the nacelle and the gap between the head 10 and flange 15. When the engine heats up and expands it forces the head 10 into contact with the flange 15. The ram air pressure acting on the internal surface of the ring increases the pressure between the head and flange.
