Abstract
613,958. Gear-cutting. MOSEY, F. W. May 8, 1946, No. 13849. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Groups XIX and XX] Observing tools and work.-A machine for grinding or lapping gears comprises means with stroboscopic illumination for projecting onto a viewing screen a static shadow of the workpiece and grinder. The grinder 1 and the work-piece 5 are driven by motors 4 and 8. A static image of the working section is projected onto a screen 16 by stroboscopic apparatus (see Group XX) comprising a light source 9, rotating mirror 11, optical system 14, prisms 15a, 15b, lens 15c, mirror 15d and viewing screen 16 ; the frequency of the beam is determined by a motor 13 driving the mirror 11. The image is compared with a master form superimposed on the screen. The two motors 4 and 8 may be coupled when their speeds are correctly synchronized. The work-piece and its spindle may be adjusted angularly and may be moved transversely towards the grinder or longitudinally across the face thereof during the generation of the gear. The spindle of the grinder may be accurately adjusted angularly and may be moved laterally relatively to the stroboscope. Hobs may be set-up in the machine and gears inspected (see Group XIX). The Provisional Specification states that the light source may comprise an electric thermionic alternating device.
